Teachers’ Perception of the Effect of Overpopulation on Classroom Management in Primary Schools in Gombe Local Government Area of Gombe State

Abstract

The study determines the impact of population on effective classroom management in
primary schools in Gombe local government area of Gombe state. To achieve the
objectives of the study, three (3) research questions were set to guide the study,
relevant literature was reviewed. The study adopted a descriptive survey research
design and structured questionnaire was used in collecting data from the 291
respondents that participated in the study while mean was used in analysing the data
collected from the respondents. The study found that: Building more classes, building
more schools, providing enough and functional teaching facilities as well as employing
qualified teachers can help to reduce the adverse effect of over population in schools
to the beeriest minimum. Using appropriate teaching aids, involving the pupils in
practical activities, using child centred method, keeping lesson short as well as
using/employing appropriate skills while teaching flexible grouping while teaching are
some of the most important skills for effective classroom management in primary
schools in Gombe local government area of Gombe state among others.
